Does One Have To Repeat The Birkat HaMazon If He Is In Doubt If He Said Ritze VeChalitzenu on Shabbat

The question was asked in Halacha about a person who is ‘Misupak’, about a person who in doubt if he said ‘Ritze VeChalitzenu’ which is an addition to the Birkat HaMazon on Shabbat. For example, a person ate Seudat Rishona which is the Friday night meal, or Seudat Sheniya which is the Shabbat morning meal, and he was not sure if he said Ritze VeChalitzenu in the Birkat HaMazon. Should he repeat the Birkat HaMazon is such a case?

On this, we have a great Machloket between Rav Moshe Levi A"H and Chacham Ovadia Yoseph. In Birkat Hashem, Rabbi Moshe Levi holds that in this case since people are accustomed not to say Ritze VeChalitzenu in Birkat Hamazon for such is not said the entire week, so therefore we say Chazaka, and assume he probably did not say Ritze VeChalitzenu when in doubt on Shabbat. He probably said the Birkat HaMazon like he is accustomed to saying. Therefore Rav Moshe Levi holds that one has to go back, because it is considered as if he definitely did not say Ritze VeChalitzenu, and therefore he must go repeat the Birkat Hamazon.

However, Chacham Ovadia Yoseph in Yabia HaOmer Chelek 7, siman 28 rules in this case, and says that one does not go back and repeat Birkat HaMazon. He brings down an opinion from Rav Shlomo Kluger who says the person is aware of the Shabbat and he knows what he is doing and there is a Chazaka from the fear that Shabbat is on him. So therefore, we can assume that he did say Ritze VeChalitzenu. Now, even though this opinion is a difficult one to understand for the person did not know what he did, nevertheless, this is the way the Chessed Lalaphim comes out, as well as Machazik Beracha, and the Bet Menucha also.

Therefore the Halacha, we follow Chacham Ovadia Yoseph like he said in Yabia HaOmer. If a person is in doubt on Shabbat if he said Ritze VeChalitzenu or not, he does not go back. He does not have to repeat the Birkat HaMazon. Again we are talking about Seudat Rishona and Seudat Sheniya. As for Seudat Shelishit, Chachamim say that anyway we don’t have to go back in Birkat HaMazon. But in the first 2 Seudot, if a person is in doubt, the Halacha is that he does not have to go back and repeat the Birkat HaMazon.
