The Beracha on Bread Made From Sprouted Wheat

Bread prepared from one of the five primary grains – wheat, rye, spelt, oats and barley – requires the Beracha of "Ha’mosi" before eating and then Birkat Ha’mazon after eating. However, this applies only if the grain was ground into flour and then made into dough and baked. Today, health food stores sell bread made from sprouted wheat which is never ground. The wheat is soaked in water, and after it sprouts, it is blended with other ingredients into dough and baked. Since the wheat is never ground into flour, the Beracha recited before eating such bread is "Mezonot," and after eating one recites "Al Ha’mihya."

However, some sprouted wheat products also contain flour, in which case the bread requires "Ha’mosi" and Birkat Ha’mazon like ordinary bread. One must therefore check the ingredients to ascertain whether the product is made only from sprouted wheat, or also from ground wheat.

This Halacha is codified in Yalkut Yishak – Berachot (vol. 3, p. 179).

Summary: If one eats bread made from sprouted wheat, which was never ground into flour, he recites "Mezonot" before eating and Al Ha’mihya after eating, unless it also contains flour, in which case it requires "Ha’mosi" and Birkat Ha’mazon like ordinary bread.
