Purim – Haircuts, Nail Cutting, Working, Eulogies and Mourners

Although it is proper to take a haircut before Purim in honor of the holiday, it is permissible to take a haircut on Purim day. By the same token, it is permissible to cut one’s nails on Purim. Writing is also allowed on Purim, for any purpose, as is taking pictures.

A person should not go to work on Purim unless this is absolutely necessary for his livelihood. In fact, the Gemara comments that one does not enjoy blessing from income earned from work performed on Purim. One should therefore stay home and involve himself in the Misvot of the holiday. However, somebody who is having construction done may allow the builders to continue their work on Purim.

Eulogies may not be delivered on either Purim or Shushan Purim. A mourner who is within twelve months of a parent’s passing, Heaven forbid, may participate in a Purim feast outside the home, unless music is being played, in which case he should not participate.
