Is It Permissible On Shabbat To Allow Security Video Cameras or Walk By A Light Activated By Motion Detector

One Halacha that was brought down in Yabia Omer, Helek 9, Teshuva 35. The question was asked of Chacham Ovadia Yoseph regarding the cameras that were put up at the Kotel in Jerusalem. Video cameras were put up in order to upgrade security and they run on Shabbat.

Hacham Ovadia was asked if one is permitted to go to the Kotel on Shabbat being that they are being videoed by a camera. He comes out that it is permissible. Firstly, the camera is operating regardless if one walks by or not. Secondly, he does not care or intend to be recorded. Thirdly, he is involved in a permissible activity of walking. For these reasons, the Hacham is lenient.

Similarly, the Hacham was lenient in a case where one walks by an outdoor motion sensored light. Since the fellow does not intend or care to open the light, and is involved in the permissible act of walking, it would be permissible.
